The Naked City (DVD) 1948 – A Murder at New York Chills out the City
The Naked City is a 1948 black-and-white film directed by Jules Dassin. The story is based on facts about a young woman who is brutally murdered in the streets of New York City and the subsequent manhunt for her killer, who eventually leads the police to a ring of thieves.
The story begins in the late hours of a hot New York summer night, where jewel thieves Willie Garzah and Peter Backalis kill Jean Dexter, an ex-model, then place her body in her bathtub. When Backalis gets drunk after the murder, Garzah kills him and then dumps his body in the East River.
After few days, Homicide detective Dan Muldoon and Jimmy Halloran are assigned to Jean’s case, in which the medical examination has determined it to be a murder and not an accident. During investigation, Dan questions Martha Swenson, Jean’s housekeeper about Jean’s boyfriends, Jimmy questions Dr. Lawrence Stoneman — Jean’s physician and Ruth Morrison — another model.
Back at the police station, Dan questions Frank Niles — Jean’s ex-boyfriend who lies about everything, including his current engagement to Ruth. At one stage, Dan determines from the bruises on Jean’s neck that she was killed by two men. Very soon, the detectives learn that Frank sold a gold cigarette case stolen from Stoneman, and then purchased a one-way airline ticket to Mexico. They also discover that Jean’s ring was stolen from the wealthy Mrs. Hylton, Ruth’s mother. Learning that Ruth’s engagement ring is also stolen property, Dan and Jimmy rush to Frank’s apartment, where they save him from being murdered by Garzah. But the killer escapes onto the nearby subway train.
Now from this stage, the murder case gets threaded with the robbery case, since the culprit is found to be one in both the cases. Can the detectives tap out the thief? If so what will be the reason behind the murder of Jean?
Why does my ~ Denon DVM1805 ~ refuse to load a DVD?
My Denon DVM1805 works extremely well… except for on the occasions I rent a New Line Cinema movie. Both, Rush Hour 3 & The Sickhouse from New Line have the “copy lock” symbol followed by the note “This DVD is copy protected and may be played only on licensed devices.”
Rush Hour 3 will play on my computer and Sickhouse will not.
Both refuse to load on the Denon.
(I cleaned the laser eye.)
Is it a setting on my player I’m having problems with or is it the format of the DVD or is it a player licensing issue?
Some of the old and cheap DVD players weren’t affected by copy protection. Try this: Download “AnyDVD” and “Clone DVD” from Slysoft. They work together. “Any DVD” removes copyguard and “Clone DVD” copies the disk. Hopefully the repica without copy protection will play. This programs come with 21 day free trial and after that, they’re $30 each to keep using. They’re worth it.
