Does listening to certain types of music help in concentration during studying?
I’ve heard that this was the case with classical music in particular, but I don’t know if it ever had such an effect on me. I personally am a fan of rock and pop music, but I was wondering if these music genres would help or hurt me if I listened to it while I studied or wrote essays.
It can, although exam period probably isn’t the best time to begin experimenting.
I personally find the volume changes of classical to be too distracting. During university, I listened to a lot of big band jazz (Ellington, Goodman, etc.). That worked best when I wasn’t too familiar with the tunes. The better I knew them, the more I listened rather than studying.
These days I can hardly do that at all — part of it is how closely you listen to music in the first place. But back then, when my mind was undisciplined and prone to wander here, there and everywhere, giving it an organized distraction helped.
Close listening to some music certainly does affect cognitive functioning. (Playing Mozart in the background doesn’t. Bach is better. 
Music is structured patterns and variations and close listening is training in recognizing those. It’s stimulating (neurons firing, brain exercise) as well, so all good. There are indeed plenty of proper neuroscience studies demonstrating that.
But trying to achieve that during exams is like trying to do your weight-training during a marathon. Ain’t gonna work.
